“We’ll be fine”, I said, not very confidently.
Doug had just asked me how far I thought we’d get before the car ran out of gas. I wasn’t sure, but had that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that we weren’t going to get very far. The “empty” light had been on for over 20 minutes, and we were at least 14 miles from the nearest gas station. Lost in my own thoughts, I had failed to notice our predicament until it was too late. Barely a minute later, the car shuddered and lost power.
